What makes VHS bands unique?
Most band members at Valders can tell you which instruments their parents and grandparents played, so there is a strong sense of continuing a great tradition.
- Our Concert Band (all freshmen) and Symphonic Band (all upperclassmen) all participate in quarterly formal concerts where bands perform high quality literature including Russian Christmas Music and variations on a Korean Folksong.
- Our Marching Band (all high school grades) participates in 30-40 parades, pep rallies, and sporting event halftime shows per year.
- Lessons are delivered in individual and small group settings. Lessons are focused on individual improvement, using a variety of tools, such as lesson books, scales/rudiments and emphasis on proper tone production and intonation.
- Optional trips are offered every year, where the emphasis is on marching in a major city, such as Milwaukee’s Memorial Day Parade, Chicago’s Columbus Day Parade or the Washington D.C. Independence Day Parade.
Most importantly, you have never met a more polite, respectful, appreciative group of kids! Of the 320 students at Valders High School, 125 participate in the band program. The program also supports two jazz bands, strong solo/ensemble participation, color guard, and an annual musical.
