Valders Middle School PBIS
What is PBIS?
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based process for improving social, emotional, and academic outcomes to promote positive, predictable, and safe school environments giving all students the opportunity to succeed.
When schools implement PBIS, they start by implementing school-wide norms of respect, responsiblity, and safety. To the right ⇒, you will find examples of what this looks like day-to-day at Valders Middle School - many of these examples can apply in the home environment as well!

Here are 5 strategies to support your child:
-
Encourage your child to have a great day at school
It is important for students to come into the school day with a positive attitude. Statements such as “You look like you’re going to have a great day,” or “You’re off to a great start this morning!” help your child have positive thinking when going into the school day.
-
Sign your child's Assignment Notebook each day (5th - 7th grades)
Check grades and more using Skyward Family Access (8th grade)
This is the best way for you to get an understanding of how your student is doing at school. It is a great way to be an active participant in your child’s success at school and to show your child that both home and school are here to support them!
-
Reinforce your child's success
Research finds that students are most successful when they are also getting positive reinforcement at home! Some families choose their own reward system for when their child meets their goals, such as getting to pick a movie for the night, picking what is for dinner, or 1 free No-Chore Pass.
-
Reinforce Respectful, Responsible, and Safe behaviors at home
Using common language in both the home and school environments help students understand what is expected of them. Sometimes children need extra explaining on what “Respect” “Responsibility” or “Safety” is.
-
Use positive language, even after a difficult day
Using statements such as, “We all have bad days. I know you can do it tomorrow,” or “It looks like today was tough, but thank you for showing me your sheet. Tomorrow is a new day,” shows your child that you believe in their success.
Valders Middle School thanks you for being an active participant in your child’s success!

Practices and systems establish a foundation of regular, proactive support while preventing unwanted behaviors. Schools provide these universal supports to all students, school-wide. |
Practices and systems support students who are at risk for developing more serious problem behaviors before those behaviors start. These supports help students develop the skills they need to benefit from core programs at the school. |
Students receive more intensive, individualized support to improve their behavioral and academic outcomes. At this level, schools rely on formal assessments to determine a student’s need. |
